Connecting the Dots: Opening Doors Across America with Simon Business School

In the ever-evolving landscape of career development, connections matter. At Simon Business School, we recognize the power of networking and mentorship in shaping the career trajectories of our students. This ethos is at the heart of "Opening Doors Across America," a transformative program spearheaded by the Benet Career Management Center and Simon's Advancement team.

Now in its sixth year, Opening Doors Across America serves as a virtual bridge between current Simon students and accomplished alumni spread across the nation. Inspired by a similar program conducted by Simon alumni in Washington, DC, the program aims to foster meaningful connections and provide invaluable insights into various industries and career paths. It's networking at scale, designed to empower students as they navigate their professional journeys.

LaTanya Johns, Assistant Dean of the Benet Career Management Center, sheds light on the program's genesis and evolution. "Opening Doors Across America emerged from a shared vision to create impactful opportunities for our students, especially during pivotal moments like internship searches or full-time job transitions," says Johns.

Central to the program's success is its ability to facilitate structured interactions between students and alumni. Through curated panels, students gain firsthand knowledge about industries, career paths, and essential skills. Alumni, in turn, find fulfillment in mentoring the next generation of business leaders.

"What's truly remarkable is seeing former students return as mentors, paying forward the support they once received," notes Johns. "It's a testament to the enduring spirit of community at Simon."

Beyond individual mentorship, Opening Doors Across America fosters connections among alumni themselves. By bridging geographical divides, the program creates opportunities for alumni to network and collaborate, enriching their professional lives.

The timing of the program, strategically placed in the spring semester, aligns with students' career aspirations and industry hiring cycles. The aim is to bridge the gap between 'just in time' hiring and students' readiness to seize opportunities.

The format of the program prioritizes student preparation and engagement. Before each session, students receive information about participating alumni and companies, enabling them to tailor their conversations effectively. Through structured discussions and follow-up opportunities, students glean insights and forge meaningful connections.

Reflecting on the program's impact, Johns emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between alumni engagement and student success. "Our alumni's willingness to invest time and expertise speaks volumes about the bond they share with Simon," she remarks. "It's this sense of community that sets Simon apart."

Looking ahead, the program continues to evolve, with a focus on enhancing student preparation and expanding engagement opportunities. The school is committed to empowering students and alumni alike, ensuring that Opening Doors Across America remains a beacon of opportunity and connection.

In a world where relationships drive success, Opening Doors Across America stands as a testament to the power of community and collaboration. At Simon Business School, we're not just opening doors—we're forging pathways to success, one connection at a time.
